Rita Dove was bornĀ  on this date in 1952.

As a student, she was at the top of her class and picked to be one of 100 high school students to meet the President.

Her family figured she’d become a doctor or lawyer. When she told them that she wanted to be a poet, her father said, “Well, I’ve never understood poetry, so don’t be upset if I don’t read it.”
