Gerardus Mercator was born on this date in 1512.

In 1569, he developed a technique to map the globe that accurately projects a sphere onto a flat surface so the earth’s longitude and latitude lines are at right angles to each other.

Polish mathematician Alfred Korzybski famously said, “The map is not the territory.”
